Silkie Bantams

History, Refinement, and a Truly Versatile Exhibition Bird

Silkie Bantams are one of the oldest and most recognizable poultry breeds in the world, admired for centuries for their distinctive appearance and gentle nature. Their origins trace back to ancient Asia, with written accounts appearing as early as the thirteenth century. The Venetian explorer Marco Polo famously described chickens with “hair like a cat” during his travels, a reference widely believed to describe Silkies and their unique, fur-like plumage. Long before modern exhibition standards existed, Silkies were already regarded as rare, unusual, and highly valued birds.

That legacy continues today, and at FableNest Farms, Silkies are curated with deep respect for both their history and their future.

Our Silkie breeding program is built from foundation stock sourced directly from some of the most respected master exhibitors in the United States. Every breeder is selected intentionally, not only for appearance, but for structure, temperament, vitality, and adherence to the Standard of Perfection. These birds are not purchased casually; they are evaluated, curated, and integrated into a long-term program focused on consistency and improvement.

Unlike operations that simply sell offspring, our team is actively involved in every stage of the process. We breed Silkies ourselves, raise them with individual attention, and exhibit them at poultry shows, evaluating how they perform under knowledgeable judges. This direct participation in the exhibition world ensures that breeding decisions are informed by real-world standards, not trends or marketing claims.

To further support genetic integrity, Silkies in our program are DNA tested through Silkie Lab LLC, helping confirm key genetic traits and maintain accuracy within breeding lines. This additional layer of verification reflects our commitment to transparency, responsible breeding, and long-term quality.

Beyond exhibition, Silkies are also one of the most versatile and family-friendly bantam breeds available. They are known for their calm, affectionate temperament and are often described as the ideal “pet chicken.” Silkies are exceptionally gentle, making them well-suited for families with children. Their docile nature allows them to be handled easily, and many become remarkably tame.

Silkies are also quiet birds, particularly hens, which makes them suitable for urban, suburban, and even indoor environments when properly cared for. It is not uncommon for Silkies to be kept as indoor companions, much like a cat or small dog. Their soft feathering, friendly demeanor, and low noise level make them an excellent choice for apartments, backyard flocks, or small homesteads alike. Whether kept in a rural setting or a city neighborhood, Silkies tend to draw attention and conversation wherever they are seen.

Functionality is another important aspect of the breed. Silkie hens typically lay one hundred to one hundred twenty small to medium cream-colored eggs per year. While not a high-production layer, their eggs are fully nutritious and can be eaten just like any other chicken egg. Many families appreciate the balance Silkies provide—moderate egg production combined with exceptional temperament and beauty.

Silkies are also valued for their strong brooding instincts, making them excellent natural mothers and dependable incubators for hatching eggs, including those of other poultry breeds.

At FableNest Farms, Silkies represent everything we value in exhibition bantams: history, beauty, correct structure, gentle temperament, and versatility. They are birds that belong equally in the show ring, the backyard, or the family home. Each Silkie raised through our program reflects careful selection, hands-on involvement, and a shared commitment by our team to uphold the breed’s long and distinguished legacy.
